These photos were taken during our 6oookm motorcycle trip this summer. One of our stops was Ocean Falls, British Columbia.
This Canadian Ghost Town captured my interest like no other spot on our trip and I must go back.
We explored the derelict town site, wandered through the decaying apartment buildings and hotels. Walked along the over flowing hydro dam and explored the forest which has overtaken mans sprawl leaving almost no trace of them ever being there.
Begin History Lesson:
The Heitlsuk native speaking people inhabited the coastal region surrounding Ocean Falls for more than 9,000 years. In 1903, the Bella Coola Pulp and Paper Company surveyed the area and was impressed with the hydro power potential of the site. In 1906, following the company's acquisition of 260 acres of land, clearing began for the town and three years later, a sawmill, hospital and school were established. In 1912, the dam was erected and the pulp mill began operating.
Population 1912: 250 people. Population 1950: over 3,500. Population 1970: 1,500. Population 1990: 70 (mostly loggers). Population 2008: 35 permanent residents
Several disasters struck the town in the course of the years: a major apartment fire in 1950 killed eight, a mudslide in 1965 killed seven; and although the school fire in 1971 didn't result in any serious casualties, it traumatized the little community.
Due to underinvestment in its facilities, the Ocean Falls pulp and paper mill was rendered inefficient and obsolete by the early 1970s. The owner at the time, Crown Zellerbach, decided to close the plant and effectively shut down the town by March 1973. The provincial government bought the town and mill out a few weeks before the planned closure and kept it running until 1980.
Much of the town is now demolished or in serious decay, but it maintains a devoted residential community and an extensive social network of former residents.
Well Canada is HUGE so I imagine there are many places like this around.
When we got to the town we were told to watch our for bears. I thought he said beers. Which I looked forward to finding. The reaction of the man turned very serious and said. Watch out for the bears. They were in town and in a boat right beside us last night.
As we walked through the town there was a lot of fresh bear droppings everywhere. Kept us on our toes.
i would say it did. lol. glad i live in a country where the only wild creatures i need to worry about leave the nightclubs at 3. but would love to see some post-human places.
lol. plenty of wild creatures, but all small. we have foxes and badgers and hedghogs and squirrels and deer and the like. you know, the kind you would be quite happy letting alice in wonderland have adventures with as long as she is back for tea. but nothing that would anctuall have you for tea. but then i hear the real killer in canada is the moose in breeding season or something. poor bear. they are not all like padington. lol
I'd like to show you some awesome nature related work from more or less unknown artists which deserve more attention - this is a must see, you won't regret it!!!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
I'm a lover of visual impacts. I like brilliant colors and shapes. And I decided to collect a whole stack of deviations that reflect that taste. These pieces showcased below deserve every bit of publicity you can give them. x)P

It did feel like we were on a movie set though. Something like a scene from Resident Evil or an "end of the world" type movie.
